DUBLIN DOUBLE AT TRACK LEAGUE FINAL

It was Dublin on the double in the premiere division at at the All Ireland Track and Field League finals held in Santry on Sunday ( August 9). DSD won the women’s title for the eleventh time since 2011 with wins for Louise King in the 100m hurdles, Ciara Wilson Bowen walk, Kate Doherty 400m hurdles, Evelyn Kwik 400m, Ella Fennelly 3000m, Molly Mullally triple jump, Molly Hourihan weight for distance, Kate Joyce javelin, Emma Roche discus and the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m squads. The club ended up with 160.5 putting it well clear of Ratoath AC on 105 points. Clonliffe Harriers were just three points behind Ratoath on 102 points for third, with wins for Abigail Kingston in the shot and Niamh Kelly in the 800m. Donore Harriers, the only other Dublin club in the women’s premier division, finished sixth.

As for the Clonliffe men, they finished on 144 points to regain the men’s title they had narrowly lost to Dundrum South Dublin in 2025. It was the club’s fourteenth title victory since 2008.Their ten wins for maximum points came from Greg Hosseny walk, Matei Ursachi steeplechase, Ben Guiden 5000m, Chris Ribands 100m, Simon Galligan hammer, Eoin Sheridan shot and discus, Euan Canniffe, javelin, and the 4x100m and 4 x 400m squads. Defending champions DSD AC had four wins - Robert Hayes 400m and 200m,Sean Roth pole vault and Conn McCluskey high jump for a total 124 points. Finishing third in 90 points was Crusaders AC with a win in the 1500m for Cai Lewis. In the men’s first division, Raheny Shamrock AC, winners in 2023, finished runners-up behind Galway City Harriers with just 3.5 points in it. Galway finished on 129 points and Raheny on 125.5 points, with wins for Cillian Kirwan 1500m, Luke Murphy 800m, Mark Kirwan steeplechase, Davyd Konovalov 100m and 200m, Rory Devaney hammer and discus, Mohammed Ibrahim Hahil pole vault, and Colm Burke long jump. Donore Harriers finished sixth. In women’s division 1, Metro St Brigid’s AC finished fourth, Crusaders AC fifth , Rathfarnham WSAF AC sixth and Raheny Shamrock AC seventh.

MASTERS ON TRACK 

Masters athletics is booming and on Friday evening and all day Saturday, in Santry the All Ireland Masters Championship attracted a record entry. Among the many Dublin club winners was Eddie O’Connor (Brother Pearse AC) winer of the Terenure 5-Mile last May on the roads and finishing first M35 in the men’s 1500m race on Friday and also the 5000m on Saturday. Another double winner over those distances was Lea Fulcher (Plant Based AC) in the M50 agreement group. 

Also in the men’s 1500m and the 800m a day later,, Michael Counsel (Raheny Shamrock AC) was first M60. Philip O’Doherty (Clonliffe Harriers) was first M65 in both races. Sticking with the 1500m, Donal Murphy (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) was first M50 while winning Winning the M45 title was Keith Young (Metro St Brigid’s AC), with Eoin Durkan (Donore Harriers) a close second. In the steeplechase, former mountain runner Niall Sherlock (Clonliffe Harriers) was first M40, and his Clonliffe club mate David Dunwoody first M55. Snezana Bechtina (Clonliffe Harriers) won the W400m 100m and 200m and then turned out for her club a day later in the league. Also on double duty was Edel Maguire, another Clonliffe master athlete, who after winning the women’s over 65 400m in some style lined for her club a day later in the 4 x 400m relay. First W50 in the 400m was Leanne Wellings (Lucan Harriers). In the sprints, Avril Dillon (Dundrum South Dublin AC) won the W45 100m with her club mate Shane Sheridan best M65 over the distance and David Leech (Blackrock AC) first M75. Over 200m, Colm Keogh (Ballymun AC) won the M50 title - a first for the club. Michael Burke (Crusaders AC) was a close second. Winning the M55 400m hurdles was Mark Woodger (Metro St Brigid’s AC).
