SCHOOLS - LATHAM AND SMITH WIN SENIOR RACES
Close to 2,000 young athletes descended on Trinity sports grounds on Santry Avenue on Wednesday (October 7) for the 17th annual Brother Schools Cross-Country races, organised by Clonliffe Harriers. A thrilling finish to the boys senior race saw Conrad Latham (St Paul’s Raheny) pushing the pace from the start and Ewan Kennedy (The High School Rathgar), fighting hard to stay with him and finishing a strong second. Third was Cameron Fallon (Blackrock College). Latham was also leading St Paul’s to team victor over St Colman’s Newry and Blackrock College. Winning the girls’ senior race was Tara Rose Smith (Sutton Park) with Freyja Carroll (Holy Faith Clontarf) second and Rachel Keaney (Newbridge College) third. Holy Faith Clontarf, was the winning team ahead of Santa Sabina Sutton and St Dominic’s Cabra.
The inter girls race saw a determined battle between Iris McCarten (Newbridge College), and Beth Reamsbottom (Santa Sabina) with McCarten coming out on top. Matilda Ayton (Newbridge College) was third. Despite having two in the top three, Newbridge College lost out to Santa Sabina for the team title, with St Dominic’s Cabra third. Students from St Malachy’s dominated the boys’ inter race where Luke Tracey (St Aidan’s) finishing a fighting third. In the team competitions ,St Paul’s Raheny and Belvedere College finished second and third behind St Malachy’s.
St Malachy’s also won the junior boys’ team competition led home by race winner Cormac Carabine. Seamus Phelan (Scoil Chiarain) was second and Sam Steenson (CUS) third. St Aidan’s finished second of the teams.
Best of the junior girls’ team was St Dominic’s Cabra with Roisin Macken finishing third behind Chloe O’Neill (Newbridge), and Aliyah Riyad (Fingal CC). Coláiste Iosagáin Stillorgan was second team and Santa Sabina third.
Huge numbers had turned out for the minor as well as the junior races, with Holy Faith Clontarf proving best of the minor girls’ teams ahead St Dominic’s Cabra and Newbridge and St Malachy’s winning the minor boys’ title ahead of St Aidan’s CBS and Willow Park. Overall team winners were the St Dominic’s girls and the St Malachy’s boys.
Large numbers also lined out in the primary schools races for 4th, 5th and 6th classes, held over a 1000m loop. Particularly impressive was the sixth year boys’ race with some 250 youngsters lining out. Of the boys, St Brigid’s BNS took team wins in the 4th class race and also finished second in both 5th and 6th class races. Of the girls, St Fiachra’s from Beaumont won both the 5th and 6th class team races. Other schools in action included Bayside SNS, Castleknock ET, St Vincent De Paul, Mary Help of Christians, San Carlo, Holy Child St John Bosco, St Josephs Terenure, Belgrove, Sutton Park, Scoil Mhuire, Shankill St Patrick’s NS, Bayside, Star of the Sea and St Colman’s College Newry.

RELAY WIN FOR DCU AT INTER-VARSITIES
DCU (Finn Woodger, Niamh Murray, Oisin Kelly, Rachel Ayers) won the mixed relay at the Annual Irish Universities Cross-Country Championships in Dundalk on Saturday (October 10) comfortably relegating UG and MTU A to second and third.
In the women’s race, the DCU team finished second, led by Meabh Eakin in eighth place. UCD , led by Cara Mohan in sixth place, was fifth team and Trinity College, led by Julie Cleary 20th, sixth. Cathal O’Reilly of DCU finished third in the men’s race, leading his team to finishing third place behind UL and UG. UCD led by Philip McGee in seventh place, finished sixth, TCD eighth and TU Dublin tenth.
AWARD FOR BALLYMUN SPRINTER
Promising sprinter Craig Knowd (Ballymun) won the prestigious scholarship award at the annual Ballymun Health and Fitness Awards, held in Trinity Comprehensive School on Thursday evening (Oct 8). The annual awards recognises the achievements not only of promising young athletes from a number of sports, but also of young and emerging coaches in those clubs. Thanks to the award Knowd will received help and support for with his training on a number of levels, including finding sponsorship for gear and travel. Over the summer, Knowd not only ran a number of 100m and 200m races at national juvenile level but also won his grade in the annual Dublin Track and Field League. Ballymun AC coach Craig Geoghan also received an award.
SANCTUARY RUNNERS SOLIDARITY RUN
Members of many Dublin clubs headed to Abbottstown for the annual Sanctuary Runners Solidarity Run 5km, among them members of Clonliffe Harriers, Donore Harriers, Raheny Shamrock, Ballymun AC and Crusaders AC. Well done all!
