ROADS


Eddie O’Connor (Brothers Pearse AC) was a delighted winner at the annual Terenure 5-Mile, organised by Sportsworld AC on Sunday morning (May 10). O’Connor finished in 25 mins 15 secs, with Patrick Mac Gabhann (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) second in 25:32 and Colm Turner (Brother Pearse AC) third and first M40 in 26:02. Dublin-based Michell Finn (Leevale AC) was eighth overall and first woman in 27:29, with Ciara Hickey (Brothers Pearse AC, W45) second in 27:56 and Maria McCambridge (Dundrum South Dublin , W50) third in 30:25. McCambridge was also leading DSD to team victory in the women’s open category, with Brothers Pearse AC second and Crusaders AC third. Brothers Pearse were clear winners of the men’s open team title, with Rathfarnham WSAF AC second and Civil Service Harriers third. In the over 40 team categories, DSD women and the Brothers Pearse men were also the winners. 


Members of Clonliffe Harriers took the top three places at the 135th Clonliffe Point-to-Point 2-mile, held on the Old Finglas Road to Glasnevin, on Wednesday (May 6). Ben Guiden was a clear winner in 9 mins 6 secs, followed by Malcolm Kiplagat in 9:45 and Sean Doran in 10:12. Michelle Finn (Leevale AC), a close fifth, was first woman in 10:14. Helen Butterly (Clonliffe Harriers) was second woman in 10:32 anther club mate Sofia Chételat third woman in 10:41. For a 40th year, this, the oldest road race in Ireland, was sponsored by Kavanagh’s Gravediggers pub in Prospect Square. 


LIFE’S A BEACH!

Eamonn O’Neill was the winner of the annual ESB BHAA Sandymount Strand 5km, on Tuesday (May 5) in 19 mins 14 secs. Ted Burke was second in 19:23 and Ronan Walsh third in 19:33. Mairead Hogan representing the host club ESB was first woman in 21:21.Claire Reidy was second in 21:36 and Orla Gormley third in 22:56. 


TRACK AND FIELD - HOME 

Dublin championships were incorporated in the second Dublin Track and Field meet held at Santry on Sunday, and winning the women’s 1500m title was Finley Cherry Maguire of Donore Harriers. A fierce battle to the line in the men’s race saw Alex Twomey make it a Donore double. Winners of the 200m titles were Michelle Duggan and Darragh Murphy, both UCD AC. In the discus, Anna Gavigan (LSA AC) and Eoin Sheridan (Clonliffe Harriers) right were crowned champions. In the  triple jump Agnese Daves (Brothers Pearse) and Alfie Casey (Crusaders) took the titles. In the pole vault Isabelle BARRISCALE (Metro St Brigids AC) and David DONEGAN (Clonliffe Harriers AC) were the champions. Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers) both finished second in their respective 400m races at the Belfast International Track meet on the Mary Peters Track, Belfast, on Saturday (May 9). Becker’s time was 52.36 secs, while Raftery clocked 46.18 secs. Winning the women’s A 400m in 53.59 was Michelle Duggan (UCD AC) .

Saoirse Fitzpatrick (Lucan Harriers) won the women’s A 800m in 2:05.35, which was a second qualifying time for the World U20 Championships. Renee Crotty (UCD AC) was third in 2:06.79. A total of five women’s and nine men’s 800m races were held. In the international women’s 1500m, Amy O’Donoghue (DSD AC) in tenth place proved best of the Irish women with a time of 4 mins 16.56 secs. Niamh Carr (DCH ) was one place behind in 4:17.12 Philip Marron (DCH AC) was seventh and best of the Irish with a time of 3:423.57 in the men’s international race. Junior athlete Charlie O’Neill (Donore Harriers) won the B race in 3:50.38, which is comfortably inside the European U18 qualifying mark of 3:53.50


TRACK AND FIELD - AWAY

Anna Gavigan (LSA AC) won the women’s discus with a throw of 53.72 at the Ter Specke Bokaal Meet in the Netherland on Saturday (May 9). A dat later, Gavigan there 53.35 to win the women’s discus at the second Dublin Graded Tracand Field Meet in Santry.

In the USA, Siún Quinn (Brothers Pearse AC) cleared a personal best 1.85 in the high jump at the in Champaign, Illinois on Friday (May 8), which was inside the World U20 qualifying standard.


SCHOOLS - HFSC Rathcoole take Community Schools title

Zone qualification rounds for schools in Leinster’s East, West and North zones were all taking place in Santry over the past week or so, while Tallaght was the venue for the CCSSCA Schools Athletics Championships on Thursday (May 7).

HFSC Rathcoole finished overall winners in both the body and girls categories. Picking up valuable points for the school was Jacob Ciomek, who not only eased to victory in the senior 1500m, but also raced the first leg of the 4 x 100m relay. 

Moyne CS from Longford finished second of the boys and Pobalscoil Neasain Baldoyle third, while Ardee CS was second of the girls followed by Palmerstown CS. Virtually every community school in the greater Dublin area was represented, with some fine performances all round.
