ANOTHER WIN FOR BEN GUIDEN
Ben Guiden of Clonliffe Harriers, who is on something of a winning streak at the moment, led home over 2,000 finishers at the Irish Runner 5km held in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on Saturday (May 16). Guiden just held off the challenge of Aaron Donnelly (Dundrum South Dublin AC) to win in 14 mins 27 secs. Donnelly was two seconds behind for second in 14:29, with his DSD club mate Killian Mooney third in 14:38. On a good day for DSD AC, Ella Fennelly was first woman in 16:03. The race was also a national championships and winning the senior men’s team title from 28 other teams was Dundrum South Dublin. Ennis Track Club was second and Clonliffe Harriers third. Clonliffe Harriers won the senior women’s title, with Dublin City Harriers third and 33 teams finishing. In the over 35 category, Raheny Shamrock won both the men and women’s titles. Skerries and Donore Harriers finished second and third of the men. Donore Harriers finished second of the over 50 men’s teams, with Raheny Shamrock third. In the over 50 women’s category, Brothers Pearse AC were the winners and Rathfarnham WSAF AC third.
In Tullamore, Alex Murphy (Dundrum South Dublin AC) finished second woman at the the Aisling Murphy 4-Mile in 22:54. The race was round 3 of the annual Peugeot Race Series.
A day later, on Sunday (May 17) at the Fastlane Half Marathon held on a loop at Grand Canal/Grange Castle in Clondalkin, Dublin, John Paul Kelly (Metro St Brigid’s AC, M40) finished second in 78:28. In a Dublin double at the Naas 5-Mile in Co Kildare on Friday (May 15), Rhys Johnson (Donore Harriers) in 25 mins 17 secs and Lauren Tinkler (Dublin City Harriers) in 28:08 were the winners.
TRACK AND FIELD - MOSTLY AWAY
At the Golden Grand Prix in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday (May 17), Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) finish fifth in the women’s 400m in 52.74 secs and Brian Fay (Raheny Shamrock AC) seventh in the men’s 30000m in 7:45.26.
Closer to home at the Meeting de Atletismo Toni Benet, in Ibiza on Saturday (May 16) Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers) won the men’s 400m in 46.51 secs, while in Germany at the Halplus-Werertage,Halle meet in Germany also on Saturday, Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) won the women’s hammer with a throw of 71.98m. A day later, in the U23 women’s discus, Anna Gavigan (LSA AC) threw a personal best 55.34m to finish fifth.
In Tucson, Arizona, at the Big Twelve track meet, Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght AC) ran a wind-assisted personal best of 10.18 (+3.9) to finish fifth in the 100m.
Locally, at the May Open track meet in Tullamore on Sunday (May 17), Elizabeth Reamsbottom (Mid-Sutton AC) won the women’s U18 2000m steeplechase in 7 mins 3.40 secs and Kamal Oresanya (Titans AC) the men’s 400m in 51.46. Gloria Oigbochie (Tallaght AC) proves fastest of the women over a series of 100m sprints with a time of 12.07 secs.
SCHOOLS
Whoever heard of cross-country in the month of May? Well, because of many postponements over the winter, Dublin City Council’s Primary Schools Cross-Country races were delayed until last week (Tuesday May 12) when they at last took place in Ringsend Park with fifteen schools in attendance and many happy faces. Well done to organisers, teachers and runners! Both primary and secondary schools were among the 3,000 or so who ran at least a couple of laps at the annual Ballymun Running Festival held on the 1.4 km lap around Trinity Comprehensive School on Wednesday (May 13). Among them was Dean Kenny who was on his 135th day of running 5km a day in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital
OFF-ROAD/ULTRA RUNNNG
TT Racers won the Wicklow Way Relay on Saturday (May 16) completing the 107km distance from Kilmashogue to Shillelagh in 7 hrs 33.01 secs. Making up a mostly masters team of eight were Raheny Shamrock pair Mark Kirwan and Ian Conroy; Malika Hammani and Alexey Marchenko, both Rathfarnham WSAF AC; Barry Minnock (Tullamore Harriers), Ruben Bartelink (DSD AC) and Orna Dignam. A record 45 teams lined out, covering legs of varying distances. Other Dublin club represented included DSD, Blackrock AC, Cabinteely AC, Dublin Frontrunners, Lusk AC and Crusaders AC.
