DUBLIN CLUBS SHINE AT EURO CROSS-COUNTRY 

Rhys Johnson in seventh place led Donore Harriers to a brilliant fourth place in 17 mins 55 secs— just four points off a medal in the men’s U20 5.6km race at the European Clubs Cross-Country, in Albufeira, Portugal on Sunday (February 8)

Just two seconds behind Johnson was Charlie O’Neill in ninth place, followed by Liam Morris 30th and Callum Twomey 36th.  Donore had won the right to represent Ireland by winning the men’s U20 team race at the National Cross-Country Championships last November. It was a first junior team win for the club in forty- three years. Clonliffe Harriers finished 16th team, led by Matei Ursachi in 38th place. Making up the team were Aaron Murray 61st, Harry Bogan 62nd and Liam Arthur 67th. In the 4x1500m Mixed Relay, the Dublin City Harriers’ quartet of Paula Delahunty, Philip Marron, Niamh Carr and Lucy Holmes finished fourth in 18 mins 25 secs, less than a minute behind the winners SL Benfica.


On a busy weekend for cross-country abroad, Irish teams were also in action at the London Cross Challenge, which incorporated the Home Countries and Celtic Cross-Country U17 Championships, at Parliament Hill on Saturday. Finishing sixth in the U17 girls’ race was Beth Reamsbottom (Mid-Sutton AC) followed closely by Robyn Kennedy (Blackrock AC) in ninth place. Both were part of the Irish Development team that finished second behind Ireland A. In the boys’ U17 race, Adam Noone (Donore Harriers) in 17th place led the Ireland Development team to fourth place. 


Locally, Emma Przymusinka (Lusk AC) was fourth and Donna Kearney (Skerries AC) sixth in the women’s 4km race at the annualRás na hEireann held in Dunleer, Co Louth, on Sunday. 


CLONLIFFE AND DSD THROUGH TO LEAGUE FINAL 

Defending men’s champions Clonliffe Harriers have made it through to the final of the National Indoors League after the second qualifying round in Athlone on Sunday (February 8). Eoin Sheridan in the shot, Craig Duffy 60m, and Sean Carrigg 1500m picked up maximum points, with Carrigg’s time of of 3:56.65 knocking three seconds off his previous best. Also through are Dundrum South Dublin, Donore Harriers and Raheny Shamrock AC. In the women’s competition, Dundrum South Dublin finished second behind defending champions Ratoath AC. Clonliffe Harriers and Metro St Brigid’s also finished in the top eight. The top eight teams will battle it out in the league final at the NIA, Abbottstown next Saturday 

In the open 200m races, Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) proved the class of the field in the women’s race clocking 23.67 secs while Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers) was fastest of the men clocking 21.35. 


MCCANN RETURNS TO RACING 

Abroad, Luke McCann (Dublin City Harriers) made a welcome return to racing when finishing sixth in the 1,500m at the Sparkassen meet in Dortmund, Germany on Sunday (February 8) in a time of 3:40.85. McCann last raced in September 2024, having competed for Ireland at the Paris Olympics.


In the USA, Sean Donoghue (Dublin City Harriers) won the men’s 1000m at the Penn Classic on Saturday (February 7), in 2 mins 22.90 secs. A day earlier, printer Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght AC) moved to the top of the current 200m rankings after clocking a personal best 21.00 secs at a meet in College Station, Texas. Aigboboh finished fifth fastest overall from the thirteen heats.

In Växjö, Sweden, also on Friday, Irish champion Eoin Sheridan (Clonliffe Harriers) threw 50.72 for second place in the men’s discus.

At the Welsh Indoors on Saturday, Michael Farrelly (Raheny Shamrock) finished sixth in the 60m with a time of 6.65 secs

Earlier in the week, Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers) opened his season with a time of 47.01 for fourth place over four 400m heats at the IFAM meet in Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium on Wednesday (February 4 ). Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) won the first of three women’s 400m heats in 52.82, which was the second fastest time of the night and puts her top of the current rankings. 


ROADS WIN FOR MURPHY

On roads, Cliona Murphy (Dublin City Harriers) was first woman in a time of 36:07 at the Rathcoffey GAA 10km in Co Kildare on Saturday (February 7), where Noelle Carr (Lucan Harriers) was first W60. Colm Turner (Brothers Pearse AC) finished fourth and second M40 in 32:22. Turner’s clubmate Michael Carolan was first M70 in 47:09. First woman in the the associated 5km was Sarah Mulligan (Dundrum South Dublin AC) in18:08. Kevin Donagher (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) was third overall and first M40 in 16:21.


A day later, Sean Doran (Clonliffe Harriers) was second in 15:46 at the Clogherhead Seaside 5km, in Co Louth. Finally, at the Graigue Rolling 5 mile in Graiguenamanagh, Lisa Cusack (Raheny Shamrock AC) was first W40 in 21:18.
