BORI SPRINTS CLEAR IN NATIONAL INDOORS
Pre-race favourite Bori Akinola (UCD AC) defended his 60m title in some style at the National Indoors Championships in the NIA Abbotstown on Saturday, winning in 6.60 secs. Max O’Reilly (Riverstick/Kinsale AC) was second in 6.69 and Craig Duffy (Clonliffe Harriers) third in 6.71. A day earlier, comeback kid Mark Smyth took his sixth national title after a show-down with Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers), holder of ten national titles, in the men’s 200m final. In a lung-busting effort by both men, Smyth just made it to the line for victory in 21.11 with Lawler clocked at 21.24 for second. Making it a Raheny 200m double was Sophie Becker, longtime member of the Irish 4x400m squad who proved the class of the field when winning the women’s race in a personal best 23.43. Molly Daly (Kilkenny City Harriers) was second in 24.07 and Mollie O’Reilly (Dundrum South Dublin AC) third in 24.14. Over the longer distances, a thrilling men’s 1500m final saw young pretender Lughaidh Mallon snatching the win from his UCD AC club mate Luke McCann on the line, with the pair given times of 3:43.45 and 3:43.51. In the women’s race, Lucy Holmes beat her Dublin City Harriers clubmate Niamh Carr for victory with the pair timed at 4:31.10 and 4:32.39. A surprise winner of the women’s 800m in 2:07.76 was 30-year-old Hannah Segrave (Clonliffe Harriers) who has declared for Ireland in the past few months. Pre-race favourite Emma Moore (Galway City Harriers) was second. Proving the class of the field in the men’s 800m was Cillian Kirwan (Raheny Shamrock AC) who won in a championship record time of 1:47.68. Finn Woodger (Metro St Brigid’s AC) finished third in 1:49.60.
Over 3000m, three men’s races took place with Ryan O’Neill (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) winning the B race 8:24.56. Charlie O’Neill (Donore Harriers), running just two days after the Leinster Schools Cross-Country, was second in 8:26.45, while Adam Nason (Donore Harriers) won the C race in 8:54.65. In the men’s shot putt, Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock AC) was winning his fourth national indoor and improved on his own championships record with a heave of 19.57. Best in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.54 was Daphni Doulaptsi Teeuwen (Raheny Shamrock AC). Other Dublin club medal winners were Hugo Magee (Crusaders AC) third in the men’s 400m in 48.92 and Ciara Wilson Bowen (Dundrum South Dublin AC) third in the women’s walk. Rounding off two days of competition were the 4 x400 relays, with UCD beating two teams from Metro St Brigid’s AC in the women’s race. A day earlier, Metro St Brigid’s won the women’s 4x200, with Raheny Shamrock AC third. Titans AC from Blanchardstown won the men’s 4x200m beating Clongriffin AC and Clonliffe Harriers.
CROSS-COUNTRY - THIRD TIME LUCK FOR LEINSTER SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS
After two postponements, the Leinster Schools Cross-Country Championships finally went ahead on Friday (February 27) at the Navan Adventure Centre in Co Meath (to whom much thanks). In the the boys’ senior race Conrad Latham (St Paul’s Raheny) finished second individual. Belvedere College, led by Charlie O’Neill and Liam Morris in seventh and eighth places, were the the team winners ahead of Blackrock College, led by Charlie White in fifth place. Megan Brunt (Loreto Dalkey) finished third in the girls’ senior race, where Castleknock Community College was second team and Loreto Stephen’s Green third.
Winning the inter girls’ race was Isabel O’Reilly (St Andrew’s Booterstown). Lily Walsh (Loreto Swords) was second and Ruby Farrelly (Our Lady’s Templeogue) third. Santa Sabina was second team and Loreto Stephen’s Green, third.
Second him in the inter boys race was Adam Noon (Templeogue College). Winning the junior boys’ race was Michael Moran (Blackrock College) with Belvedere second team. Ailbhe Finucane (Loreto Stephen’s Green) came out on top in the girls’ junior race, with her team finishing second and Castleknock Community College third. Finally, at minor level, Loreto Beaufort was the winning girls’ team while St Aidan’s CBS from Whitehall took the boys’ title. The top fifteen individuals and three teams qualify for the All Ireland Schools Cross-Country Championships at Mallusk, Co Antrim next Saturday. Good luck all!
ROADS - CLONLIFFE TOPS IN LUSK
Tadgh Donnelly (Drogheda and District ) raced away for victory at theLusk 4-Mile on Sunday (March 1) with a time of 18 mins 38 secs. Ben Guiden (Clonliffe Harriers) was second in 19:22 and James Hyland (Raheny Shamrock AC) third in 19:49. Catherina Mullen (Metro St Brigid’s AC) was first woman in 22.00, followed by Sinead Farrell (LSA AC) in 22:24 and Patricia Ferguson (Skerries AC) in 24:29. In a tight battled for team honours, Clonliffe Harriers with 99 points beat Raheny Shamrock on 103 points. LSA AC, led by Joe Holt, was third, with Skerries AC fourth, host club Lusk AC fifth and Sportsworld AC sixth of the nineteen mixed teams entered.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Karl Nolan (Clonliffe Harriers, M40) was the winner of the Naas Town 10-Mile in 55 mins 41 secs. First woman in the associated half marathon was Molly Hyland (Crusaders AC) in 82 mins 18 secs. Michaela McNamara (Artane Beaumont RC) was third woman in 90:32.
In Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, Lisa Madden (Sportsworld) was the overall winner of the Brain Tumour 5km in 18 mins 50 secs. Luke Judge was second and first man in 19:06 and Aaron Browne (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) second man and first M40 in 19:10. In Carlow, Roisin O’Reilly (Dublin City Harriers) was second overall and first woman in 17:41 at the Graiguecullen 5km.
