GIDEY THE PACEMAKER

Efrem Gidey (Clonliffe Harriers) was on pacemaking duties at the Antrim Coast Marathon, Larne, Co Antrim on Sunday 24th August and although he brought the field through 5km in 13:45 and 10km in 27:59, he still managed to finish in 77:18 with a smile on his face. Finishing in 65:37 was Paul O’Donnell (Dundrum South Dublin AC). His personal best of 64:46 dates back to Berlin in 2022. John Travers (Donore Harriers) finished in 70:54.


Elsewhere, the winner of the Longford Half Marathon in 71 mins 4 secs was Kieran Regan (Brothers Pearse AC); Matthew Collins (PortmarnockAC) won the marathon in 2:33.12, with his clubmate Olivina Sexton finishing third woman in 3:20.42.


LIFE’S A BEACH!

Master athlete Colm Rooney (Clonliffe Harriers, M40) led home almost 500 finishers at the Portmarnock Beach 5km, on a damp Friday evening in Dublin (August 22) with a time of 15:45. Jack Miskally (Craughwell AC) was second in 15:52 and James Hyland (Raheny Shamrock AC) third in 16:01. Irene Gorman (Crusaders AC) was first woman in 19:57, followed by Emma Przymusinska (Lusk AC) in 20:21 and Helen Peelo (Clonliffe Harriers, W40) in 20:32. Ken Doyle (Raheny Shamrock was first M60. Almost half the finishers (247 to be exact) were over 40.


Winning the Strangford Festival 5km on Friday evening was Lee Maginnis (Clonliffe Harriers, M45) in 19:38. 


In Co Kildare Dylan Wright (Lucan Harriers) finished second in the Celbridge AC 5km with a time of 14 mins 46 secs. First woman was Dublin-based Ide Nic Dhomhnaill (West Limerick AC, W40) in15:53. Roisin O’Reilly (UCD AC) was second in 16:44 and Edel Monaghan (DCH) third in 17:32. Winning the mixed team category, which had attracted an imressive entry of 44 teams, was Dundrum South Dublin -—Maria McCambridge, Eanna O Bradaigh, Ruth Wilson and Ruben Bartelink. 


David Kirwan was the winner of the penultimate round of the 2025 Raheny 2-Mile Series on Tuesday (August 19) in a time of 10:39. Zoe Quinn was first woman in12:07. This long-lasting series ends next Tuesday with the Peter Doody Cup. 


ANOTHER BIG THROW FOR FOGARTY

Niamh Fogarty (Raheny ShamrockAC) finished third overall in the discus on Saturday (August 23) at the Danish Championships at the Hvidovre Stadium, near Copenhagen, with a throw of 55.65. Fogarty, who won her seventh national discus title last month in Santry, has thrown consistently over 55 metres this season as well as setting the Irish record of 58.30 in Ramna, Oklahoma, last April.


In Belfast on Thursday evening (August 21), Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers ) won the elite 400m at the Fab 5 meet organised by Lagan Valley AC at the Mary Peters Track in a time of 45.57 secs. Rafferty is part of the Irish 4x400 squad.

In the women’s 400m, Kate Doherty (Dundrum South Dublin AC) was the winner in 54.41 with Freyja O’Carroll (Raheny Shamrock AC) first W18 in 59.26. 


Torrential rain meant that conditions were difficult for the Diamond League meet in Lausanne on Wednesday (August 20), where Brian Fay (Raheny Shamrock AC) still managed to finish in a time of 13:36.61 — well off his best. 

At the British Milers Club meet in Tooting Bec on Wednesday, Alex O’Neill (Limerick TC) again got the better of Sarah Healy (UCD AC) in a blanket finish to the race women’s A 800m race. O’Neill, who had beaten Healy for the Irish title a few weeks earlier, finished sixth in a massive personal best time of 2:00.18 with Healy a fraction behind for seventh in 2:00.19, also a personal best. In the men’s B 1500m, U20 athlete Lughaidh Mallon (UCD AC) finished 11th in 3:46.51, while in the women’s A 1500m, Amy O'Donoghue (Dundrum South Dublin AC) was eighth in a personal best 4:13.22. 


In Germany, Garrett O’Toole (Clonliffe Harriers) finished seventh in his 800m heat in a season’s best time of 1.47.09 at the Abendsportfest, Pfungstadt, also on Wednesday. O’Toole is originally from the USA.


Catch-up: Clonliffe member Hannah Segrave won her 800m heat at the Meeting Voor Mon in Leuven, Belgium on Saturday (August 16) in a Clonliffe Harriers club record time of 2.01.68. Segrave, who won a bronze medal for Great Britain at the 2017 European U23 Championships in 2017 and broke two minutes for the first time last year, is aiming to run for Ireland in the future. She made her Irish Championships debut in Santry last month, where she finished fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:05.39 having won her heat.


A SECOND WARRIORS WIN FOR MOONEY

For a second year Killian Mooney (Dundrum South Dublin AC) was the overall winner at the Warriors’ Run 15km in Strandhill, Co Sligo on Saturday (August 23) leading home over 1,200 finishers in a time of 53 mins 6 secs. The race takes runners to the to the top of Knocknarea and back. Mooney is part of the Irish team selected to run at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Canfranc, Spain from September 25. Edel Monaghan (Dublin City Harriers), also a member of the Irish team for Canfranc, was second woman in 68:42.
