DUBLIN 10-MILE TITLES FOR MURCHAN AND PURCELL
A big road race of a busy weekend was the Irish Life Frank Duffy 10-Mile, held in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on Saturday (August 16), where Pierre Murchan (Dublin City Harriers) lead home over 3,650 finishers with a time of in 49 mins 2 secs. Dublin-based Hugh Armstrong (Ballina AC) was second in 49:45. Kate Purcell (Raheny Shamrock, W40) finished third woman in 59:58 and since she was first Dublin club athlete home, she took the Dublin 10-Mile Championship titles as did Murchan in the men’s category. Dominating the team competition were Raheny Shamrock who took three titles —men and women’s senior and the M35 age group. DSD AC won the women’s W35 and W50 titles while Clonliffe Harriers proved best of the M50 teams.

Men’s age category winners were: Ian Fitzgerald (Donore Harriers) M35; Mark Cassidy (Brothers Pearse) M40; Bernard Geraghty (Donore Harriers) M45; Aidan Langley (Lusk AC) M50; Alan Fairbrother (Brothers Pearse) M55; Terence Neary (Clonliffe Harriers) M60 andPhilip O’Doherty (Clonliffe Harriers) M65.


Women age group winners were W35: Niamh Coghlan (Lusk AC) W35, Ciara Flynn (Up and Out Fitness AC) W40; Katherine Duff (Blackrock AC) W45; Fionnuala Doherty (Metro St Brigid’s AC) W50;Caroline Murphy (Brothers Pearse AC) W55; Una Cherry (Raheny Shamrock AC) W60 and Mary Lynch (Raheny Shamrock AC) W65.

DUBIN DOUBLE IN KILCOCK
Ian Guiden (Clonliffe Harriers) took his first win in some time at the Kilcock 10 from 10 (miles) in Co Kildare on Sunday (August 17) when he led home 451 finishers in a time of 50 mins 27 secs. Adam Nason (Donore Harriers) finished third in 54.01. In a Dublin double, Faye Dervan (Dublin City Harriers) was first woman in 58:36. Clonliffe Harriers took the men’s team title.


 Finished second in the Cork City 10km also Sunday in 30 mins 7 secs was Killian Mooney (Dundrum South Dublin AC). 
Racing machine Sean Doran (Clonliffe Harriers) was the winner of the Rathkenny 5km in Co Meath on Saturday evening in a time of 16:06. Junior athlete Conor McGuirk (Lusk AC) in his second race in three days was second in 16:16 and Faye Dervan (Dublin City Harriers) in her second race in two days finished fourth overall and first woman in 16:53.

MIDWEEK EVENING RACES

North Dublin clubs turned out in force for the Man O’War 7km, in north Co Dublin on Thursday evening (August 14) where Conor McGuirk was a clear winner in a time of 23:11, with his Lusk AC clubmate Daniel O’Brien second in 24.00. Third in 24:11 was Eoin Gallagher (Skerries AC) First woman was Sheila Bourke (Lusk AC) in 29:19. Caroline Hynes (Balbriggan and District AC) was second in 29:59. And Emma Przymusinska (Lusk AC) third in 30:11.


On Wednesday evening (13 August), Sean Doran (Clonliffe Harriers) was the winner of the Castlepollard 5km in Co Westmeath with a time of 15 mins 35 secs. Second woman In 18:33 was Serena Tuffy (Dundrum South Dublin AC).
With with only two rounds to go, Wes O’Brien and Chloe Griffin took their first wins of the series in round 11 of the Raheny 2-Mile Series on Tuesday evening (August 12). Spanning a few generations, O’Brien ,who was also first M45, finished in 11 mins 5 secs, while Griffin was first juvenile and fifth overall in 11:58. Paul Cowhie (Crusaders AC, M60) was second overall in 11.47.

ANOTHER FAST TIME FOR HEALY

Sarah Healy (UCD AC) underlined her consistency this season with a time of 3:57.95 for ninth place in a top quality women’s 1500m at the Diamond League Meet in Silesia on Saturday (August 16). It was a third sub 3 mins 58 seconds time for Healy this season an she remains top of the Diamond League women’s 1500m rankings, thanks to her win in Rome, second place in Paris and third in London, where she ran the mile.


A large group of Irish athletes had travelled to Leuven in Belgium for the Meeting voor Mon, also on Saturday, where Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers) finished fifth overall in the 400m with a time of 46.54 secs. 


In London, Irish 100m champion Bori Akinola (UCD C) won the second of twenty-nine ‘heats’ in a time of 10.24 secs at the Stratford Speed Meet on Sunday (August 17) i. In the second round, Akinola improved his time to 10.20. Also in the 100m, Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers) clocked times of 10.44 and 10.46, while. Stephen Gaffney (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) ran 10.66 and Alamiu Bankole (Fingallians AC) 10.73. Gaffney also ran a 400m heat finishing second in 46.94. In the women’s races, Paralympian Orla Comerford (Raheny Shamrock AC) ran a time of 11.97 in the 100m,. In the 400m, Michelle Duggan (UCD AC) finished second in 53.67, and Kate Doherty (DSD AC) third in 55.11.


After collecting his fourth Irish outdoor shot put title, Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock AC) returned to the USA where, on Friday August 8, he produced a season’s best throw of 20.48 at a meet in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania. At the same venue in 2024, Favors had improved his own Irish record to 20.93m. Favors is currently lying 33rd in the world rankings, with the top 36 qualifying for the Tokyo World Championships, The Irish team will be announced soon after the cut-off date for qualification nest Monday, August 25.

CHERRY ORCHARD AC RUN THE RIDGE
A large group from the Cherry Orchard running club in west Dublin travelled to Laragh in Co Wicklow for the annual Run the Ridge Trail races on the slopes of Derrybawn mountain, with a 30km race on offer this year as well as the standard 10km and 20km races. Leading the club club in the 30km was Sean Meehan, who finished sixth and second M40 in 2 hrs 34 mins 40 ses for a hard run made tougher by the hot, sunny conditions. Just two places behind in eighth place was Philip Slattery, followed by Dean Comerford, Stephen Bailey, Jason White and Christina Byrne who was first W35.
In the 20km, after a bit of confusion out on the course, Julia Douglas arrived back at the finish in 3:06.10 followed by Nicole Hogan, Donna Clarke, Denise Delaney and Rachel Nolan. For Brothers Pearse AC, Eddie O’Connor won the 30km after leading from the start, while Anthony Alexander finished eighth M50 in the 10km race. First woman in the 10km was Claire Sullivan Crusaders AC,W40 in 48:08 Her clubmate Aine Kenny finished second W40 in the 30km race. Also in the 30km, Peter Doyle (Lusk AC) finished first M55 and Anne Lyons (Clonliffe Harriers) second W55

SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR LSA’S SINEAD
At the start of the month, 18-year-old Sinead Farrell from the LSA club in Donabate proved the star of a small Irish team at the World U20 Skyrunning Championships held at Fonte Cerreto, Italy on the Gran Sasso. In the vertical race - a 1km climb over 3.8km - Farrell finished seventh. Two days later in the Sky race itself, Farrell was ninth under 20 and 18th overall with a time of 3 hrs 50 mins 39 secs for the 23km race with a lung-busting 2,226m or climb. Races are organised by the International Skyrunning Federation and take place in mountainous venues above 2,000m.
