FAST TIME FOR HEALY IN LONDON

With the European Championships just three weeks away, Sarah Healy (UCD AC) ran a personal best 8 mins 25.63 secs to finish third in the women’s 3000m at the London Diamond League meet on Saturday (July 18).That time knocked over a second off her previous best of 8:27.02 set last season. It means that Healy maintains her place as the second fastest Irishwoman ever over the distance behind Sonia O’Sullivan who ran 8:21.64 in 1994; coincidentally, also at the London meet. In the women’s Para 100m, Orla Comerford (Raheny Shamrock AC) proved the class of the field winning in a personal best 11.79 secs, while in the men’s 4 x 100m relay, the Irish men’s team that finished fifth in 39.17 secs.

In Rieti, Italy at a the European Athletics U18 Championships on Sunday (July 19) Charlie O’Neill (Donore Harriers) finished fourth with a time of 3:57.86 in the 1500m, missing out on a medal by an agonising 0.16 of a second. Earlier in the week, Evelyn Kwik (DSD AC) had clocked 55.21 for sixth in the women’s 400m semi-finals.

ELSWEHERE…

Cillian Kirwan (Raheny Shamrock AC) ran a time of 1:46.89 for ninth in the men’s 800m at Night of Athletics, in Heusden, Belgium on Saturday (July 18), putting him third on the current Irish list behind Mark English and Cian McPhillips. In the women’s 1500m, Eimear Maher (DSD AC) ran 4:07.59 for eighth with Jodie McCann (DCH) eleventh in 4:11.20, while in the 800m, Renee Crotty (UCD AC) clocked a time of 2:07.74. 

Also on Saturday, at a meet in Finland, Rory Devaney (Raheny Shamrock AC) threw 70.69 for second in the men’s hammer. At the Lucerne meet in Switzerland, on Thursday (July 16), Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC) finished fourth in the women’s 200m in 23.07 secs. She subsequently withdrew from the Night of Athletics meet in Heusden. In the men’s men’s 200m, Mark Smyth (Raheny Shamrock) was 11th in 22.30 and was part of the men’s 4 x 100m relay team that clocked 39.25 secs for fourth place. Also on the team were Bori Akinola (UCD AC) and Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght AC). In the women’s long jump, reigning Irish champion Elizabeth Ndudi (DSD AC) was seventh with a best of 6.24m.

BECKER AND RAFTERY WARM UP FOR NATIONALS

Locally, Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) and Jack Raftery (Donore Harriers) proved the class of their respective fields in the 400m races at the AI Open Games in Santry on Sunday, which many athletes were using as a warm-up for next weekend’s National Track and Field Championships. In the women’s race, Becker was a clear winner in 52.54, and Raftery was equally dominant in the men’s race, winning in 46.37. Other wins for Dublin athletes came from Iseult O’Donnell (Raheny Shamrock) in the women’s 800m with a time of 2:06.64, Bevan McCaffrey (Raheny Shamrock) in the women’s 100m hurdles in 14.52 secs, and Cara Murphy (DSD) in the 400m hurdles clocking 59.71 secs. Of the men, Bilal Kanimodo (Clonliffe Harriers) proved fastest in the series of 100m race with a time of 10.81. He also finished second in the 200m behind David Doyle (DSD AC) with the pair finishing in 21.44 and 21.81secs respectively. Over 1500m, Elizabeth Gahan (DCH) won the women’s race in 4:26.12 while Louise Woodger (MSB AC) proved best of the men in 3:56.21. Third in that race was master athlete Colm Rooney (Clonliffe Harriers) in 3:57.69. In the field, Anna Gavigan (LSA AC) continued her winning streak in the women’s discus with a best of 54.83, and Eoin Sheridan (Clonliffe Harriers) was an equally emphatic winner of the men’s discus with a 53.95 throw. Making her first appearance at an Irish competition was US-based javelin thrower Kate Joyce, who has declared for Ireland and for DSD AC, and duly won the competition with a 52.75 throw. In 2025, Joyce finished ninth in the NCAA Championships in Eugene with a personal best effort of 56.03. The B standard for the European Championship is 58.20m. 

In the National Combined Events Championships, also in Santry over the weekend, DSD AC took four medals. Louise King (DSD) finished second in the women’s competition, while in the age groups, Kevin Leahy and Peadar McGing won the M50 and M70 titles respectively, and Robbie Tallon was third U20. 

IRELAND SECOND AT SCHOOLS HOME INTERNATIONAL

Ireland finished second behind England at the annual SIAB Schools International, held in Belfast on Saturday (July18). Among those gaining valuable points for the Irish girls’ team were Adona Zewdie (Mt Anville/DSD AC) winner of the girls’ discus with a personal best 43.06m, Elizabeth Reamsbottom (Santa Sabina Sutton/Clongrifffin AC) who was third in the steeplechase steeplechase, and the winning girls 4 x 100m team. Of the boys, Patrick Pucek (PS Neasain Baldoyle/Clongriffin AC), was second in the boys’ long jump; Daniel Murphy (Gonzaga/Crusaders AC) second and Jack Moylan (Gonzaga/Crusaders AC) fourth in the hammer; Theo Duffy (St Paul’s Raheny/Raheny Shamrock AC) third in the steeplechase while both the e 4 x100m and 4x400m teams finished second.

O’DONNELL WINS IN LUCAN

Former Irish champion Iseult O’Donnell (Raheny Shamrock AC), back racing after a long injury break, clocked 2:06.99 to win the women’s 800m at the seventh Dublin Dublin Graded track meet in Lucan on Wednesday evening (July 15). In the men’s grade A 800m, fastest of the Dublin club athletes in 1:53.19 was Lucas Ryan (Crusaders AC), closely followed by Conor McGuirk (Lusk AC) in 1:53.32. Helena Butterly (Clonliffe Harriers) won the A grade women’s 3000m in 10:02.12, with her Clonliffe club mate Ben Guiden fastest of the men in 8:23.03. Dominating the men’s shot put was Antonio Santana-Otero (Crusaders) AC with a mighty heave of 17.48. Santana-Otero is a former Spanish junior champion with a best of 18.65m. LARK IN THE PARK FOR COLLINS!

Finishing a close second in a time of 50 mins 3 secs at the Irish Runner 10-Mile in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, on Sunday morning was Kane Collins (Donore Harriers). The race incorporated a national championships and had attracted a wide entry from all over the country. Recording a very creditable time of 62:40 was Paralympian Greta Streimikyte (UCD AC), better known for her track exploits. In the senior team competitions, Dundrum South Dublin, led by Jessica Quinn, proved best of the women with Raheny Shamrock AC second, while Donore was third of the men. Dublin winners in the age groups were Ruben Bartelink (DSD AC) M50, Martin Kelly (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) M65, Patrick Browne (Metro St Brigid’s AC) M75; Orna Dignam (DSD AC) W40, Tara Kennedy (Raheny Shamrock AC) W50, Vanessa Sallier (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) W55, and Mary Lynch (Raheny Shamrock AC) W75.

Finally, the winner of the Dublin City Council BHAA 5km, in Irishtown on Wednesday (July15) was Jacob Collins (Revenue) in 16:47. Paddy Lyons (Media A) was second in 17:18 and Owen Fletcher (IMB) third in 17:24. Orla Dignam was first woman in 18:47, followed by Elaine de Courcy (SDCC) and Amy Moriarty.
