KOREAN GOLD FOR IRISH MASTERS!

A strong Irish team returned  from the World Masters Track and Field Championships, Daegu, South Korea last week with a grand total of  seventeen medals, seven of those gold. Of those medals, four were won by Edel Maguire of Clonliffe Harriers, competing in the over 65 age group. Maguire who is still capable of beating women half her age, had started her campaign by finishing third in the 100m. She  then went on on to win both the high jump and 400m and also finished second in the 200m. Another multiple winner from a Dublin club was  Rachel Murphy (Plant Based AC) who won the W40 1500m  and was third in the 5000m as well as finishing sixth in both the  800m and the 8km cross-country. Lea Fulcher, also a member of Plant Based AC, took silver in the M50 1500m and was seventh in both the 800m and 8km cross-country. USA-based Pat Kelly of DSD AC finished second in the W75 100m  for a silver medal and and fourth in both the 200m and 400m. Narrowly missing out on a medal was Chris Sibanda (Clonliffe Harriers) who finished fourth in the M35 100m and fifth in the 200m.  His clonliffe Harriers club mate Snezana Bechtina  finished sixth in the W40 200m and narrowly failed to qualify for the 100m final. Karl Fitzmaurice  of Crusaders AC finished tenth in the M50 1500m and also competed in the 800m. Three home-based  members of DSD had also travelled. Shane Sheridan finished eighth in both the M65 100m and 200m and helped the M65 4 x 100m team to a bronze medal. Kevin Byrne, although forced to pull out of  his specialist decathlon, lined out for the M55 110m hurdles, while Ronan Gately competed in the  M55 100m and, with Byrne also on the team, helped the M55  4x400m team  to seventh place.

TRACK AND FIELD

In Trier, Germany, at the Eifel Flutlichtmeeting, Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers) finished sixth in a competitive 1500m A race clocking a season’s best 3:33.40. Brian Fay (Raheny Shamrock AC)  ran a season’s best 3:40.08 for seventh in the B race.

At the Serbia Athletics Meeting in Belgrade, Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock AC) finished fourth in the shot with a best of 19.65, while Bori Akinola (UCD AC) clocked 10 26 secs to finish tenth in the 100m.

On Saturday (September 5) at the BMC Meet in Bury, Luke Murphy (Raheny Shamrock AC)  won the men’s B 800m in 1:50.56. In the D race, Antoine Roquette (DSD AC) finished second in 1:56.42. 

ULTRA

Winner of the Kerry Way Ultra 200km on the weekend of September 4-5 was Philip Slattery (Cherry Orchard AC)  in 22 hrs 18 mins 34 secs.  Slattery finished fourth last year. Oran Finegan (Clonliffe Harriers) finished third and second M40 in 22:50.59. 

MOUNTAIN RUNNING 

In Italy at the Trofeo Nasego 4.3km vertical race, Sinead Farrell (LSA AC) finish best of the Irish women in 20th place with a time of 46:58 for the uphill only race.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Cormac Dixon (Tallaght AC) finished third in the men’s 8km race at the Providence College Friar Invitation in the USA, which opened the NCAA college cross-country season on Friday (September 4) 

ROADS

At the IWA Run’n’Roll 5km, in St Anne’s Park, Ashley Carroll (Ballymun AC) finished eighth and first woman in 21:54. Brian O’Reilly (Clonliffe Harriers) was first M50 in 18:38.

In Co Mayo, Ashley Hayes (Crusaders AC) finished third in the Ireland West 3/4 Marathon held in Swinford with a time of just over two hours.
