ROADS -TOBIN TOPS IN DUBLIN HALF
At the second annual Dublin City Half Marathon, Sean Tobin (Clonmel AC) was a clear winner in a personal best time of 63 mins 11 secs. Second in 63:43 was Paul O’Donnell (Dundrum South Dublin AC), with John Travers (Donore Harriers) third and first M35 in 63:54. Last year’s winner Killian Mooney (Dundrum South Dublin AC) finished fourth in 64:11.
Finishing first first woman in a personal best 71:25 was Dublin-based Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill (West Limerick AC, W40). In the M50 class, Ruben Bartelink (DSD AC) was second M50 in 76:24 and Bernard Geraghty (Donore Harriers) third in 77:41. Edwin Keville (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) was first M60 d Martin Kelly (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) first M65 and John Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock AC) first M70. Fiona Stack (Raheny Shamrock AC) was second W40 in 79:19 and her club mate Mary Walsh second W50 in 90:25. Orla O’Flynn (Crusaders AC) was second W55, while in the W65 category, Grainne Grennan (Blackrock AC) was first and Sheila Verdon (Portmarnock AC second. A total of 6,815 men and 5,427 women had entered the race.
First woman at the Drogheda 10km on Sunday was Fiona Roche (Raheny ShamrockAC, W40) in 36:42. Alessandro Porazzini (Balbriggan and District AC) was third M40 in 36:45 and Warren Donnolly (Skerries AC) first M50 in 39:22. A total 1,512 finished the race.
First woman in 80 mins 2 secs at the Limerick Half Marathon was Alex Murphy At the West of Ireland Women’s 10km Mini Marathon in Ballina, Co Mayo, Serena Tuffy finished second in 37:34. Both are members of Dundrum South Dublin AC.
At the Leinster Novice and Masters Road Championships, held in Gowran, Co Kilkenny on Saturday (May 2), Eddie O’Connor (Brothers Pearse, M35) won the men’s masters 5km race in 18 mins 55 secs Des Tremble (Donore Harriers) was first M55. Sportsworld AC had travelled to Gowan in force and and, led by Dan Clemo, they not only won the club team title but also helped Dublin to the county title. Sportsworld also finished second team in the men’s novice race, led by Dylan Keegan in eighth place, with Dublin second country. Winning the novice women’s 3km race was Elizabeth Gahan (Dublin City Harriers) in 10 mins 25 secs.
In Co Carlow, also on Saturday, Dermot Woodgate (Civil Service Harriers) was first M60 in 94:45, and Noel O’Dwyer (Clonliffe Harriers) first M55 in 94:46 at the Tinryland Village Half Marathon.
TRACK AND FIELD - HOME
Santry was host on Saturday for the opening round of this year’s Dublin Track and Field league and in the men’s hight jump, which was also a championships event, junior athlete Craig Knowd, jumped 1.75m to take a first ever Dublin title for Ballymun AC. Knowd also won his grade C 100m heat. In the top graded men’s 3000m Danny Nugent (Ace AC) ran a fine time of 8 mins 15.8 secs. James Hyland (Raheny Shamrock AC) was second in 8:28.37 and Charlie White (Donore Harriers) third in 8:44.54. Winning the women’s A 3000m in 9:31.63 was Faye Dervan (Dublin City Harriers). Megan Brunt (Blackrock AC) was second in 9:37.08 and Isabel O’Reilly (Blackrock AC) third in 10:00.65. Celebrating his 21st birthday with the fastest overall time in the 100m was Killian Curran (UCD AC). Curran won his race in 10.88 secs, with Alamin Bankole (Fingallians AC) second in 10.92 secs. In the second round of races, Curran was again the winner but in a slower time of 11.11, while Bankole ran 11.06 in a different heat. Fastest in the women’s 100m races was Aisling Kelly (UCD AC) in 11.90 secs. Second in 12.06 was multi-eventer Anna McCauley (City of Lisburn AC) who also won the shot, with a 12.98m effort. Second in the shot was junior athlete Beauty Ikpefua (Tallaght AC), with a 10.50m best. Rounding out the day were the 800m races and in a closely-fought men’s A race Andrew McGilton (Dundrum South Dublin AC) just held off the challenge of Conrad Latham (Raheny Shamrock AC) to win in 1:54.25. On the same day in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, Colm Rooney (Clonliffe Harriers, M40) won the A-graded men’s 1500m race at an Irish Milers Club meet held at the TUS track. Ryan O’Neill (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) was second in 3:51.11 and Fintan Kerins (Clonliffe Harriers) third in 3:51.37. In the women’s 1500m Amy O’Donoghue (Dundrum South DublinAC) finished third in 4:22.56. Saoirse Fitzgerald (Lucan Harriers) won the women’s A graded 800m in 2:05.48, with her time inside the World U20 qualifying standard. Second in the men’s 3000m with a time of in 8:38.87 was Tom Breslin (Clonliffe Harriers). In the men’s B 800m, Charlie O’Neill (Donore Harriers) was third in 1:52.77.
TRACK AND FIELD - AWAY
At the World Relays in Gabarone, Botswana, an Irish women’s 4 x 400m team that included Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock qualified for the World Championships when winning its repechage heat in 3 mins 23.82. A day earlier, Becker, along with Jack Rafferty (Donore Harriers), was part of the mixed x400 relay team which finished eighth overall and qualified for the European Championships later this year.
In the USA, Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght AC) broke a nineteen-year old Irish record when winning the 200m in 20.27 at the Cameron Burrell Invitational in Houston, Texas, on Thursday evening (April 30). Also on Thursday evening Rhasidat Adeleke (Tallaght AC) opened her outdoor season in Austin, Texas, when winning one of the 200m races in 22.86.
In Hiroshima on Wednesday (April 29), Brian Fay (Raheny Shamrock AC) ran a time of 3:40.32 for third in the 1500m.
