DIDA LEADS HOME 24,000 WOMEN AT MINI MARATHON
Ethiopian-born athlete Chaltu Dida (Dundrum South Dublin) was a comfortable winner of the VHI Dublin Women’s 10km, held on Sunday (May 31). Her time of 31 mins 39 secs put her over a minute clear of the chasers —and not far off Sonia O’Sullivan’s course record of 31:28 set in the year 2000. Finishing second and third were Dublin-based twins Sorcha (Limerick Country Club AC) and Íde Nic Dhomhnaill (West Limerick AC) in times of 32:44 and 33:57 respectively. Íde is a previous winner of the race, and the sisters were also first and second over 40. First in the visually impaired category was track Paralympian Greta Streimikyte (UCD AC) in an excellent time of 35:57. Previous winners of the race from Dublin clubs were out in force with Maria McCambridge of host club Dundrum South Dublin AC second W50 in 37:48 and Annette Kealy (Raheny Shamrock AC), first W55 in 39:29. In other age groups, Grainne Grennan (Blackrock AC) was first W65 and Mary Lynch (Raheny Shamrock AC) first W75. A total of 24,133 completed the race. TRAVERS THIRD IN NATIONAL ‘HALF’
At the Cork Half Marathon, also on Sunday, which was also a national championships, John Travers (Donore Harriers,M35) finished third in 66:54 and Killian Mooney (Dundrum South Dublin AC) third in 68:14. Rathfarnham WSAF had travelled to Cork in numbers and title winners for the club were Gerry Boyle M60, Donal Murphy M70 and the M35 team. Other medals winners for the club were Jackie Kingston second W60, Sheelagh Jones second W65 and David Power and Kevin Donagher second and third M40. Other Dublin club members taking medals were Mary McNamara (LSA AC) second W35, Eoin Connolly (Raheny Shamrock) third M45, and Donore Harriers third M35 team, as well as Billy Byrne (Blackrock AC) second and Denis Murphy (Raheny Shamrock AC) third M65. Finishing third and first M40 in the Cork City Marathon was Wayne Waldron (Donore Harriers) in 2:26.22. Fourth and first M50 was previous winner Gary O’Hanlon (Clonliffe Harriers) in 2:26.59.
Elsewhere, junior athlete Charlie White (Donore Harriers) won the Dunleer 5km on Saturday evening with a time of 15 mins 13 secs, while at the Balbriggan Summerfest 5km on Thursday (May 28) the winners were Anthony Brady (Coolock RC) and Niamh Coughlan (Lusk AC).
Winning the Irish Life BHAA 5-Mile in Dunboyne on Tuesday in a time of 26mins 12 secs was Tallaght AC’s Tomás Fitzpatrick. First woman was Mairead Hogan (ESB ).
TRACK AND FIELD - SCHOOLS
A Dublin first and third in the inter boys’ 3000m, were just one of the highlights of the All Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday and Sunday (May 29- 30). Charlie O’Neill (Belvedere College) was the race winner in 8:43.35, followed byAdam Noone (Templeogue College) third in 8:49.13. For St Paul’s Raheny, Conrad Latham won the senior boys’ 800m and Theo Duffy the inter boys steeplechase. Winning the junior boys’ 800m was Braxton O’Shea (GC Reachlainn Donaghmede). Michael Moran (Blackrock College) won a closely-fought junior boy’s 1500m and sprinter Theo de Bonis (Castleknock College) the inter boys 100m title. Over 1500m, Leia Ryan (Castleknock Community College) won the senior girls’ race, while Abigail Finucane (Loreto Stephen’s Green) took the junior title. In the discus, Holly Helme (Rathdown School) and Sophie Ferguson (Sancta Sabina Sutton) were winners in the inter and junior competitions respectively. Finally in the boys’ 4 x 100m relays, St Fintan’s Sutton senior,Terenure College inter, and Willow Park Blackrock minor, were all winners.
TRACK AND FIELD - AWAY
At the BMC GP Series meet held at Birmingham University on Saturday (May 30). Eimear Maher (DSD AC) finished third in the women’s A grade 1500m in 4:11.18. In the men’s grade A 1500m Philip Marron (DCH AC) was tenth in 3:43.27. Louise O’Loughlin (Donore Harriers) won the B race in 3:44.82. Jonas Stafford (UCD AC) was fifth in the A 5000m in 13:50.72.
In Bydgoszcz, Poland on Friday evening, Cathal Doyle(Clonliffe Harriers) finished ninth with a time of 3:39.71 in the 1500m.
Also on Friday, at the West Region qualifiers in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Elizabeth Ndudi (DSD AC) jumped 6.36 in the long jump to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championship. On Thursday, in Bergen, Jodie McCann (DCH AC) ran 4:12.86 for 13th in the women’s 1500m.
Finally on Monday, national champion Bori Akinola (UCD AC) improved his 100m personal best time to 10:19 secs at the Stratford Speed GP. Akinola also ran a PB of 20.83 for the 200m. In the women’s 200m, Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) ran a personal best 23.43. In all cases the wind reading was just legal.
