DSD ON THE DOUBLE AT IRISH LIFE DUBLIN MARATHON
On a day full of drama, David McGlynn (Waterford AC) and 19-year-old Ava Crean from Limerick were the winner of the National Marathon which was was incorporated into the Irish Life Dublin Marathon held on Sunday. The race also included the Dublin Championships and making it a Dundrum South Dublin double in the men and women’s categories were Paul O’Donnell and Meghan Ryan. O’Donnell finished third Irishman and seventh overall in 2 hrs 12 mins 11 secs. O’Donnell’s DSD AC clubmate Hiko Tonosa, a last minute entry to the race and the defending champion, had made a promising start to the race, but by the 30km mark, had fallen away from the leading group and was clearly struggling. He dropped out shortly afterwards. Second Dublin athlete was John Travers (Donore Harriers) who was making his marathon debut and finished tenth Irishman and 20th overall in 2:23.21. Not far behind was Travers’ Donore clubmate Kane Collins, who was third Dubliner and twelfth Irishman. He finished in 2:23.57.
In the women’s race, Meghan Ryan also running he first marathon, finished fourth Irishwoman in 2:40.33. Fiona Stack (Raheny Shamrock AC, W40), who was running her fourth consecutive Dublin Marathon and also ran the race in 2013, finished second in a personal best 2:44.14. Cliona Murphy (Dublin City Harriers) , another marathon debutant, was third in 2:47.23
Previous national marathon winner Gary O’Hanlon (Clonliffe Harriers), who was lining out in Dublin for a tenth time, not only finished fourth Dublin athlete in the men’s race but was also first master and first over 50. His time was 2:27.49. O’Hanlon was also leading home a massive fifty-two finishers from Clonliffe Harriers. Just three seconds separated the top three Dublin athletes in the over 40 category with David Power (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) the winner in 2:30.04, followed by Mark Cassidy and Eoin Hinchy, both Brothers Pearse AC, in 2:30.05 and 2:30.07. Winning the Dublin M45 title was Graham Ahearne (Raheny Shamrock AC) in 2:40.49, Paul Kelly (Metro St Brigid’s AC ) was second in 2:43.47 and Arthur Calnan (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) third in 2:44.40. First M55 was Ger O’Toole (Blackrock AC) in 3:04.35. Gerry Dore (Tallaght AC) was first M60 in 3:10.37, Tom Cuddy (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) first M65, and Ronan Ward (Civil Service AC) not only the winner of the Dublin M70 title but also the national champion. A clear winner of the the national and Dublin over 80 title was Eddie Coyle (Tallaght AC). His time was 5:20.28.
In the women’s age groups, Olivia Sexton (Portmarnock AC) finished in 2:57.37 behind Fiona Stack. Tara Darcy (Tallaght AC) was third in 3:08.20. Noreen Brouder (Sportsworld AC ) was first W45 in 2:50.08, followed by Alli Coll (Brothers Pearse AC) I 3:14.02 and Sinead Ward (DSD AC) in 3:15.34. Mary Walsh (Raheny Shamrock was first W50 in in 3:12.42, with her Raheny clubmate Tara Kennedy second in 3:16.28 and Orla Cox (Civil Service Harriers) third in 3:30.55. Caroline Hynes (Balbriggan and District AC) was first W55, Elizabeth Rouine (Raheny Shamrock) first W60, Grainne Grennan (Blackrock AC) first 65, Mary Lynch (Raheny Shamrock) first W70 and Eileen O’Brien (Lucan Harriers) first W75. Meanwhile, at the Valencia Half Marathon in Spain, also on Sunday. Efrem Gidey (Clonliffe Harriers) finished 13th in a time of 61 mins 2 secs - not far off his best of 60:51 from September 2024.
LEINSTER TITLES FOR DCH, DONORE AND RAHENY
Fiona Hawkins (Dublin City Harriers) won the women’s novice 4km race at the Leinster Novice and U20 Cross-Country Championships held at Gowran, Co Kilkenny on Saturday (October 25). Hawkins, who holds the Irish U20 5000m record, finished in 14 mins 48 secs, with Dublin champion Edel McCreery (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) second in 15:11. Dublin City Harriers took the team title, with Aine O’Connor, Grace-Anne Culhane and Katie Greene making up the team.
Sportsworld AC, led by Rachel Calvey in seventh place, finished second team, followed by Liffey Valley seventh and Donore Harriers tenth. With four finishers in the top seven, Dublin took the county team title, beating teams from six other counties. Third in the men’s race with a time of 19: 25 was Adam Nason (Donore Harriers) who was also leading Donore to team victory. Rory Cousins, Simon O’Toole and the veteran Des Tremble made up the scoring four, backed up by Jordan Athaide, Colin Murphy, Koffi Kpoglo and Robert Dunne,
Liffey Valley AC led by Cormac Jones in twelfth place, finished fifth and Raheny Shamrock seventh. Sportsworld finished eighth and Civil Service Harriers ninth. In a closely-fought county team championships, Dublin beat Kildare on count-back with both teams of six ending up on 101 points. In the men’s U20 race, Raheny Shamrock AC won the team title with Conor Latham (Raheny Shamrock AC) eighth, Charlie Gunawardhana 11th, Mark O’Callaghan 18th and Daniel Connolly 25th. Backing them up were Christian Finn 29th and George Sevastopulo, 41st. No other Dublin club had entered a team in either the men or women’s U20 races.
BRIAN GREGAN RETIRES
Nine times Irish 400m champion Brian Gregan of Clonliffe Harriers has announced his retirement after a distinguished career lasting over twenty years.
After finishing second in the 400m at at the 2011 European U23 championships, Gregan competed at four European Championships from 2010 to 2016, with his best result a sixth finish at the 2012 championships. Indoors he competed at at the European Championships of,2011, 2013 and 2017 and at the World Indoors of 2010 and 2022. His best times of 45.26 secs outdoors and 46.07 indoors leave him third on the all-time Irish lists. Gregan is not lost to athletis and has taken up a role as coach to the Clonliffe sprints group.
