SEASON’S BEST TIME FOR HEALY
Sarah Healy (UCD AC) recorded a season’s best time of 3 mins 57.42 secs for ninth place in the women’s 1500m at the Silesia Diamond League meet in Poland on Sunday. Race winner Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia ran a world-leading time of 3:55.06. Healy finished fourth in the 5000m and fifth in the 1500m at the recent European Championships.
ROADS
Hiko Tonosa (Dundrum South Dublin AC) made a welcome return to racing when finishing eleventh and first of the Irish at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon in Larne, Co Antrim on Sunday (August 23). His time of 62 mins 7 secs. It was Tonosa’s first race since dropping out of the Paris Marathon last April. Only three Irish made the top thirty in the race, which as well as an elite field from Kenya and Ethiopia, featured a large entry from the United Kingdom. In the 5km race, held in conjunction with the half marathon, John Travers (Donore Harrier, M35) just lost out to Ermias German in the chase for the line when he finished second in 13 mins 52 secs. Colm Rooney (Clonliffe Harriers, M40) was fourth in 14:02 and Faye Dervan (Dublin City Harriers) fourth woman in 16:06.
Winner of the 40th Warriors Run 15km trail race in Strandhill, Co Sligo, on Saturday was Gavin Callery (Dundrum South Dublin AC) in 56 mins 14 secs. First woman was Sarah McCormack, a former Clonliffe Harriers member, in 63 mins 18 secs.
On Friday (August 21), Eoin Flynn (Rathfarnham WSAF AC, M45) was the winner of the Tara 5km, in Co Meath, in a time of 15 mins 36 secs, while a day earlier, Paul Nagle (CRU/Tallaght AC) was the winner in 16 mins 26 secs of the Keypoint BHAA 5km, held at Keypoint Business Park in Dublin Niall Sherlock (Teachers/Clonliffe Harriers) was second in 16:55 and Mick Quirke (ESB/BlackrockAC)) third in 17:08. Sean McCreery (Accountant/Rathfarnham WSAF AC)) was fourth and first M60 in 17:17. Elaine Courtney (SDCC) was first woman in 19:50, followed by Vanessa Sallier (AON/Rathfarnham WSAF AC)) in 21:24 and Catherine Tiernan (Teachers) in 21:52.
Also on Thursday evening, Dylan Wright (Lucan Harriers) was the winner of the Celbridge 5km in a time of 15 mins 16 secs. Second in 15:23 was Eanna O Bradaigh (Dundrum South Dublin) while third in 15:25 was Sean Doran (Clonliffe Harriers). Lauren Tinkler (Dublin City Harriers) was second woman in 17:19. In the age groups Maria McCambridge (DSD AC) was fifth and first W50 in 17:43, Ruben Bartelink (DSD AC) first M50 in 16:19, and Michael Counsel (Raheny Shamrock AC) first M60 in 16:54. Dundrum South Dublin was the winning team first team, with 36 mixed teams entered and 450 finishers in all.
On Wednesday (August 19) Kevin Donagher (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) was the winner of the Longford 5km Trails Series No 3, at Derrycassin Woods
PARA ATHLETICS
At the England Athletics Senior Para Championships in Bedford over the weekend, Lana Sutton (UCD AC) won the para 400m in a PB time of 61.84 secs, while junior athlete Aryell Sheedy (Donore Harriers) won the T37 200m in a season’s best 27.03 secs and clocked 59.20 for fourth in the 400m.
GETTING READY FOR THE COUNTRY!
With the track season over, thoughts turn to the cross-country season with the Dublin Novice Championships tentatively planned for the Phoenix Park on Sunday October 4 For women Autumn is already in the air.
Representatives of Dublin clubs are invited to a Meet and Train leaders meeting to decide dates and venues for the Meet and Train Cross-Country League in the Crusaders clubhouse at Irishtown Stadium on Tuesday September 22 (8pm) The league consists of four races over a distance of about 3km and offers to host a race are welcome. Venues last season were the Curragh, the DSD grounds, Tymon Park and Abbotstown. Info Lisa Shine at
