TRACK AND FIELD
Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) became the first Irish senior athlete to take a medal at the annual European Throwing Cup, in Nicosia, Cyprus over the weekend when she finished second in the women’s hammers. Tuthill’s best throw of 72.48 was a personal best and brings her ever closer to Eileen O'Keefe's national record of 73.21 set in 2007. Tuthill, now aged twenty-two, won the U23 title last year. A day later, Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock AC) added a bronze medal to the Irish haul in the men’s shot with a best of 19.68m. In the U23 women’s discus competition, Anna Gavigan (LSA AC) finished fifth with a throw of 51.07. In the senior women’s discus , Niamh Fogarty (Raheny Shamrock A) finished 15th with a throw of 52.70.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Paul Fleming (Ornua/Rathfarnham WSAF AC) and Laura McDonnell emerged as winners at the Central Bank BHAA 6km Cross-Country which, after two postponements, finally took place on a winding course around Jobstown Park, Tallaght on Saturday (March 14). Fleming had almost a minute to spare when winning the race with Joe Walsh second and Alessando Porazzini third. McDonnell was fourth overall, followed by Clare Mulligan (Health Group) and Maria Pozo (BMS). The final BHAA cross-country race of the season (also after a postponement) takes place at the ALSAA, Dublin Airport on Saturday March 28.
INDOORS - NATIONAL U20 AND U23
Winning the U20 60m title at the National U20 Indoors held at the NIA, Abbotstown, on Saturday was Ciaran Farrell (Donore Harriers) in a time of 6.92 secs. In the women’s 200m, Chidinma Adikaibe (Metro St Brigid’s AC) finished first in 24.48 secs and Gloria Oigbochie (Tallaght AC) second in 24.63 secs. In the field Agnese Daves (Brothers Pearse) won the women’s triple jump with a 10.97m effort, and Lauren Healy (Dundrum South Dublin AC) the high jump at 1.66m. Finished a close second in the men’s 400m was Andrew Hayes (Dundrum South Dublin AC) in 48.48. In the U23 championships which also took place, Uche Dishu (Tallaght AC) won the women’s 60m in 7.59 secs and the 200m in 24.46 secs. Debbie Laval (UCD AC) was second in the 60m in 7.67. Joe Doody (UCD AC) won the men’s 400m in 47.96 and Ciara Wilson Bowen (DSD AC) the women’s walk. Finishing second in the 800m was Ryan O’Neill (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) in 4:02.22 while in the 800m, Andrew McGilton (DSD AC) finished second in 1:52.81.
MASTERS MEDAL IN ATHLONE
At the National Masters Indoors held in Athlone a day later, Steven Colvert (Crusaders AC) was an impressive winner of the M35 60m in 7.40 secs. Sinead O’Connor (Metro St Brigid’s AC) won both the W40 women’s 60m and the 200m with Snezana Bechtina (Clonliffe Harriers) second behind her in both races. Bechtina went on to win the W40 400m. Other double winners in the sprints were Thomas Moran (Clonliffe Harriers) M50, Shane Sheridan (DSD AC) M65 and David Leech (Blackrock AC) M75. Kevin Byrne (DSD AC) won the M50 60m hurdles and the pole vault and Mark Woodger (Metro St Brigid’s AC) the M55 60m hurdles and triple jump.In the women’s 60m, Adina Gheorghiu (DSD AC) W50 and Carol Kearney (Lucan AC) W60 also took titles. Edel Maguire (Clonliffe Harriers) added to her considerable collection of medals when winning both the W65 400m and the high jump. Maguire was also part of the winning Ireland Over 65 mixed 4x200m relay team which set a world record time for the event. Over 3000m, Annette Kealy (Raheny Shamrock AC) won the W55 title, while Orla Gordon (Liffey Valley) took the W35 title. Clubmates Rachel Murphy and Lea Fulcher won the W40 and M50 800m titles respectively. In the field, Dublin winners were Lisa Corrigan (Crusaders AC) W50 long jump, Gavin Nolan (Lucan Harriers) M45 long jump, Patrick Curran (Tallaght AC) M45 pole vault, Andrej Dmitrenko (Clonliffe Harriers) M55 pole vault, Michael McCarthy Sr (Donore Harriers_ M40 triple jump, Lucy Moore (DSD AC) W65 weight for distance and Niall Allen (Clonliffe Harriers) M50 shot and weight for distance.
On the USA college circuit, Louise O’Loughlin (Donore Harriers) helped Adams State to team victory at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Virginia when finishing third in the men’s mile in 4:12.07.
In the Division 1 Nationals in Arkansas, Elizabeth Ndudi (DSD AC) jumped 6.04m for 14th place in the women’s long jump, while Sean Donoghue (Dublin City Harriers) ran the opening leg for Villanova in the distance medley relay. The team finished 11th.

ROADS
Michael Brady (Raheny Shamrock AC) led home 1,171 finishers at the Skerries 10km in Co Dublin on Sunday (March 15) in a time of 31 mins 45 secs. Local athlete Eoin Gallagher (Skerries AC) was second in 32:24 and Terry Shanley (Clane AC) third in 33:51. Finishing fourth overall and first woman in 33:55 was Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill (West Limerick AC). Alex Murphy (Dundrum South Dublin AC) was second in 36:54 and Maura Kearns third in 38:56. In the over 50 age groups, Geraldine McHale (Lusk AC) was first woman and Adrian Kavanagh of the host club best of the men. Raheny Shamrock, with four finishers in the top twelve, finished first of the twelve women’s teams, ahead of Lusk AC and Clonliffe Harriers. Skerries AC proved best of the eight men’s teams followed by Raheny Shamrock AC and Lusk AC.
