ROONEY AND DUFFY TAKE DUBLIN SENIOR TITLES IN KILBEGGAN

Colm Rooney of Clonliffe proved that age is no barrier to sporting success when he won the Dublin Cross Cross-Country title at Kibeggan Racecourse in Co Westmeath on Saturday (November 8). Following the cancellation of the Dublin Championships at Corkagh Park six days earlier on the ordersof South Dublin County Council, senior and U20 races were incorporated into the Leinster Championships. Rooney, the Dublin masters champion from last January, proved the class of the field in the men’s race completing the 6km course in 28 mins 30 secs. Second in 28:43 was Pierre Murchan (Dublin City Harriers) in 28:43. Danny Nugent (Ace AC) was third in 28:56 and Fintan Kerins (Clonliffe Harriers) fourth and third Dubliner, in 29:00. Just four seconds separated the placings from fourth to sixth with Gavin Curtin (Donore Harriers) fifth in 29:03 and Mahad Mohammed Egaal (Clonliffe Harriers)s ixth in 29:06. With Stephen Cahsin in seventh place their fourth placer, Clonliffe Harriers were comfortable team winners with just sixtteen points. Dundrum South Dublin, led by Eanna O Bradiagh in eighth place were second and Donore Harriers third. Raheny Shamrock AC finished fourth, Liffey Valey fifth and Sportsworld sixth, with only six teams entered. In the Leinster team competition , DSD beat Clonliffe by a single point for the title. Tullamore Harriers was third. Taking the top three places in the women’s 4km race were Dublin City Harriers with Orla Duffy the winner in 22:01, Edel Monaghan second in 22:07 and Lucy Holmes third in 22:22. With Cliona Muprhy finishing in eight place, DCH with 14 points were clear winners of the team title ahead of Clonliffe Harriers on 31 points. Sportworld AC was third and Liffey Valley fourth with just four teams entered. DCH also took the Leinster title ahead of Parnell AC, Sportsworld and Liffey Valley. 


Finishing fourth overall and first for Dublin in the women’s U20 race was Cara Mohan (Metro St Brigid’s AC) in18:35. Megan Brunt (Blackrock AC) was just three seconds adrift for fifth and second Dubliner in 18:38 . Finishing eighth and third for Dublin was Julie Cleary (Donore Harriers). Lucan Harriers was the winning Dublin team led by Isabel Cuffe, who finished fourth for Dublin. DSD was second, Donore Harriers third and Clonliffe Harriers fourth.  In the men’s U20 race, Tom Breslin (Clonliffe Harriers) finished second overall and first Dublin athlete in 15 mins 51 secs. In a closely fought race, Conrad Latham (Raheny Shamrock AC) was fourth and second Dubliner in 15:47 and Charlie White (Donore Harriers) fifth and third for Dublin in 16.00. With four in the top seven, Donore Harriers was the winning Dublin team. Clonliffe Harriers finished second and Rahney Shamrock third, with DSD fourth and MSB fifth.


CLONDALKIN AND CABRA SCHOOLS TOPS AT MHC-DH LEAGUE ROUND 2 

Coláiste Bríde, Clondalkin continued on its winning ways when coming home first in all three races at the second round of the MHC-Donore Harriers Schools Athletics League in John Paul II Park (’The Bogies’) on a crisp Wednesday morning last week (November 5). In road relays based on a a 930m lap of the park, the Clondalkin school won all three girls’ races. Biggest turn-out was for the junior girls race with thirteen teams entered. Finishing second behind Coláiste Bríde was Clogher Road. Pobailscoil Iosolde from Palmerstown was third and Mercy Inchicore fourth. Teams from Kylemore College, Coláiste Eoin Crumlin and Cabra Community College also finished. In the minor race, Pobailscoil Iosolde were the runners-up with two more teams from Coláiste Bríde third and fourth and CBS St James’s Street fifth. At intermediate level, Cabra Community College finished a fighting second behind the all conquering Coláiste Bríde, with Pobailscoil Iosolde third and Mercy Inchicore fourth. Making up Coláiste Bríde’s winning team who finished in 19 mins 28 secs were Joy Abedisi, Ava Gardener, Lily O’Sullivan and Mia Dunne. Cabra CC clocked 20:27 and Pobailscoil Iosolde 22:54. Minor and junior teams ran four legs of the 930m lap while the final runner in the intermediate races ran two laps. Local school St Declan’s won two of the three boys’ races and finished second in the third. Not only that but Transition Year students from the school helped out by marshalling the course. Making up the winning boy’s intermediate team were Blake Bradley, Donal Delaney, Lucien Dollet McCann and Charlie Franzoni, who took on the final two-lap leg. McCann was the only runner to break three minutes for the lap with a time of 2 mins 52 secs — the fastest of the day. The team’s total time was 15 mins 3 seconds which put them over a minute clear of the school’s B team which finished in 16:40. Third in 17:27 was Clogher Road while fourth in 17:36 was Drimnagh Castle. 


A massive twenty teams turned out for the boys’ junior race, where Pobail Scoil Iosolde were the winners from St Declan’s. Drimnagh Castle finished third and Coláiste Eoin fourth. In the minor boy’s race, St Declan’s were again the winners. Clogher Road finished second and St Seton’s Ballyfermot third. Overall, with two legs down and one to go, Coláiste Bríde are hot favourites to take Ann Woodlock Trophy as best girls school, with the battle on for second place between Kylemore College and Clogher Road. The boys’ competition for the Cyril White Trophy is more open although St Declan’s Cabra have the advantage at the moment over Drimnagh Castle and Clogher Road. All will be decided at the final round of the MHC-DH league at the Donore Harriers track. THat will take place over two days on 3 March and 12 March.
