ROADS 

Istvan Szogi of the Dublin Track Club training group was the winner of the 40th Patrick Bell & Nicky Philips 5km in Bohermeen, Co Meath, on Saturday (July 6). Szogi dominated the race winning in 14 mins 51 secs. Karl Nolan (Clonliffe Harriers) was fifth and first M450 in 15:45. In the age groups Eoin Durkan (Donore Harriers) was eight overall and first M45 in 16:06. Other age group winners were Ian O’Reilly (Brothers Pearse)M50, Des Tremble (Donore Harriers) M55, and Michael Counsel (Raheny Shamrock AC) M60. First woman was Ciara Hickey (Brothers Pearse AC, W45) in 16:33. Hope Saunders (Clonliffe Harriers) was second in 16:58 and Maria McCambridge (DSDS AC, W50) third in 17:45. 

In the men’s team competition, Clonliffe Harriers were the clear winners with Brothers Pearse second, while in the women’s competition, Brothers Pearse were the winners and Clonliffe Harriers second. 


At the Grocers’ 4-Mile Fun Run in Leopardstown, Dublin, David Scanlon (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) finished second in 21:43, followed by Ruben Bartelink (Yoplait/ Dundrum South Dublin AC) third in 21:50 and Sarah Mulligan (Dundrum South Dublin AC) fifth and first woman in 23:47. A total of 663 completed the run. 


Winning the opening round of the annual Lord Mayor of Raheny 2-Mile Series on Tuesday (June 2) were Stephen Butler in 10:18 and Elaine McNulty in 14:02. The 13-race series continues on Tuesday evenings until late August and guests are welcome. Entry €7 per race.


TRACK AND FIELD - HOME 

 Pierce Geoghegan (Liffey Valley) won the Dublin 5000m men’s championships title at the Dublin Graded Track and Field’s fourth meet in Santry on Wednesday (June 3). Geoghegan’s time of 15:44.54 put him comfortably clear of Cameron Fallon (Dundrum South Dublin AC) in 15:51.78. Geoghegan’s Liffey Valley team mate Geoffrey Alexandre was third in 15:54.21. 

Winning the women’s title was Aisling O’Connor (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) in 19:37.66. Also taking place were graded races over 800m and 100m. Fastest in the 800m was Ewan Kennedy (Dundrum South Dublin AC) in 1:56.25. Daniel Prendergast (Clonliffe Harriers) was second in 1.58.26 and Alan Hegarty (Castlebar AC) third in 1:58.65. David Gormley (DSD AC) won the B race in 1:59.19. Fastest over the three D races was Michael McCarthy (LSA AC) in 2:12.92. Winning the women’s A race was Lucy Holmes (Dublin City Harriers) in 2:12.96. Robyn Carey (Lusk AC) was second in 2:14.62. Winning the B race was Elaine Kennedy (Sportsworld RC) in 2:25.71. Lorna Sheehan, also from Sportsworld, won the C race in 2:27.06.

Last races on the track were the 100m sprints, which took place on the far side of the track to make best use of the gusting wind although times run in such conditions do not count for records. First in the women’s A race, with the wind measured at +5.2 was Ella Duane (UCD) in 12.54. With an equally strong wind, Emily Jachna (Clonliffe Harriers) won the B race in 12.77. By the time the men took to the track for the A races, the wind had died down to under the legal +2.0, and Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers) won the second A grade heat in a legal 10.57 (+1.3). Alamin Bankole (Fingallians) was second in 10.76. Third fastest on the night was Robert Hayes (DSD AC) with a time of 10.85 in the opening heat. With the wind by then gusting at +3.7, Colm Keogh (Ballymun) AC) won the first of two D heats in 12.40. A massive nine men and five women had entered the hammer competition, with Daniel Murphy (Crusaders) the men’s winner with a throw of 51.79m. Star of the triple jump was recently crowned Leinster champion Daphni Dolaptsi-Teeuwen (Raheny Shamrock) with a leap of 12.75. Best of the men was Tim Ciparsons (Clongriffin AC) with 12.07. 


At the Irish Milers Club Meet, held in Irishtown, Dublin on Saturday (June 6) Colm Rooney, (Clonliffe Harriers, M40) ran a personal best 14:12.05 to finish second behind German visitor Sebastian Hauf, whose time was 14:11.92. James Hyland (Raheny Shamrock AC) was third in 14:16.15. In the women’s 800m, Amy O’Donoghue (DSD AC) finished second in 2:08.31. Race winner was visitor Sofia Vidak (Harrow AC) in 2:07.31. Zoie Ritchie (UCD AC) was third in 2:08.05. David Bosch (DSD AC) beat his club mate Robert Hayes in the men’s 400m, with the pair given times of 47.64 and 47.82 secs.


TRACK AND FIELD - AWAY 

At the Sparkassen Werfertag throws meet in Germany on Sunday (June 6) , Eric Favors finished fifth in the men’s shot with a 19.98m effort and Niamh Fogarty threw 52.19 for eighth place in the women’s discus. Both athletes are members of Raheny Shamrock AC.


 In Belgium at the Flanders Cup in Oordegem, on Saturday (June 5) Marcus Lawler (Clonliffe Harriers ran a wind-assisted time of 20.81w (+2.1) in the men’s 200m. He also ran a legal 10.66 (+1.3) in the 100m. In the 400m, Michelle Duggan (UCD AC) recorded a time of 54.25 secs. Ciaran Carthy (DSD AC) ran 47.23 secs in the men’s 400m. 


On Friday (June 4), 17-year-old Dubem Amah (Tallaght AC) ran wind-assisted times of 20.78 for 200m and 10.39 for 100m in Geneva Switzerland. 


Over the longer distances, Sarah Healy (UCD AC) finished 17th in her first serious 5000m at the Rome Diamond League on Thursday (June 4) . Her time of 14 mins 48.88 secs qualifiers her for the European Championships in August and also puts her top of the current Irish listings. 


In the 5000m at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, on Wednesday (June 3) , Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers) finished fifth in the 1500m in 3:34.00 and Brian Fay (Raheny Shamrock AC) seventh in the 5000m with a time of 13:23.11.

Finally, Anna Gavigan (LSA AC) threw a massive personal best of 57.38m and Irish U23 record when finishing second in the women’s discus at a meet in San Vito al Tagliamento, Italy on Tuesday (June 2)


HILLS 

At the European Off-Road Championships, held in Slovenia from 5 to 7 June, Ewan Kennedy (DSD AC) finished 20th and the team 11th in the men’s U20 6km race on Sunday. In the senior women’s 16km on the same day, Sinead Farrell (LSA AC) finished 34th and the Irish team 10th. A day earlier, Sorcha Loughnane (Donore Harriers) was 50th woman in 5 hrs 37 mins 8 secs in the 25km trail race. A team of 40 Irish athletes had travelled.
