RECORD NUMBERS SIGN UP FOR WOMEN’S WINTER LEAGUE

Rebekah Vickery (Brothers Pearse AC) led home 181 finishers at the opening round of this season’s Women’s Meet and Train Winter League, hosted by Dublin Front Runners AC. Vickery pushed the pace from the start of the 3.3km cross-country race held on a undulating course at the Curragh in Co Kildare. Her time of 12 mins 55 secs put her eight seconds clear of her clubmate Sophie McGovern who finished in 13:03. Third in 13:11 was Roisin McMahon (Sportsworld AC). Emma Finlay Esker RC) was fourth, Lorna Sheehan (Sportsworld AC) fifth and Grainne Black (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) sixth and first W40. Other age group winners were Helen Maher (Blackrock AC) W50, Linda Timpson (Waterstown Warriors) W60, Hazel Foster (Waterstown Warriors) W70 and Ann Woodlock (Donore Harriers) W80. Woodlock, aged 87, recently won the W85 1500m title at the European Masters Championships.

Over three hundred women of all ages from seventeen Dublin running clubs and groups have signed up for this year’s series where the best three results from four will count. Teams consist of six runners with three to count and are divided into five graded categories, giving everyone a chance to score for their team and win a prize. There are also individual age group awards with the best three of four results to count. Clubs who have already entered teams include Crusaders, DSD, Sportsworld, Dublin Front Runners, Brothers Pearse, Lucan Harriers, Waterstown Warriors, Esker, Love2 Run, and Tallaght AC. A new club entering for the first time this year is Artane Beaumont RC. Belpark Tri Club has also entered a team. Next round of the league takes place on January 18 at the DSD grounds in Tibradden on January 18. Other dates are Tymon Park on February 22, and Abbotstown on March 22 followed by a fun run and prizegiving at a later date. Since the best three results count, entry for the series is still open. Fee is €20 for the series or €7 for an individual race. Email Lisa Shine at meetandtrainleague@gmail.com to sign up your group or club. More pictures are at https://www.flickr.com/photos/lindie/
